Do you want to get rid of your self-limiting beliefs?
This summary of the book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz presents four powerful insights on how you can stop your self-limiting beliefs.
1. Be impeccable with your words
The use of words is the most powerful tool that we humans have.
What we say can positively or negatively impact ourselves and other people.
It can build or destroy us.
We have to listen carefully and understand that the word is also a self-revealing mirror.
This is probably the most important insight you will gain from reading this article.
If someone gossips about a person, then the gossiping person has probably many personal problems.
People express themselves based on who and how they are.
In other words, if you are constantly negative about other people, you are probably a negative person yourself.
In this case, use the self-revealing mirror to work on your personal development.
Use your words wisely, also when taking to yourself.
Start telling yourself how wonderful you are.
You can change yourself by changing your use of words.
2. Do not take anything personal
Whatever happens around you, do not take it personally.
It is not always about you (it would be selfish).
Others have their own opinion according to their belief system, so nothing they think about you is really about you, it is about them.
3. Do not make assumptions
We make the assumption that everyone sees life the way we do.
We assume that others think the way we think, feel the way we feel, and judge the way we judge.
This is why most people have a fear of being themselves around others.
They think everyone else will judge them like they judge everyone else.
Stop judging others and you will soon stop caring about whether other people will judge you.
Your energy and time is limited, manage what is negative but focus on what is positive.
4. Always do your best
Everything is alive and changing all the time and therefore, your personal best might often be of high quality but there will be other times when it barely meets your quality standards.
Regardless of your circumstances, keep doing your best, not more and not less.
If you always do more than your best, you will eventually burn out and become less productive.
These four agreements need to be practised repeatedly.
Everything that you have ever learned, such as bicycling, driving, or writing, you learned through repetition.
Implement these four agreements into your own life and practise them on a constant basis.
Do it often enough and you will attain true freedom to express yourself.
