Follow these guidlines and create a good work environment

An employee is more productive when the work environment is good. The question is how can an employee create good work environment? Employees can contribute to a good work environment but the employer is ultimately responsible for it. An employer can create a good work environment and in the course of this blog post multiple ideas will be presented on how it can be done.

Using communication

Communication within the work environment has to be structured in a two-way communication system (Clow & Baack, 2014). Not only the employer should be listened to but also the employees. When the sender sends its message to the receiver, the receiver has to give feedback. This will achieve the following: first, the sender shares his thoughts and secondly, the receiver shares what he thinks of the received thoughts. This increases the understanding of the content of the message on both sides. This system is very useful for managers who use a participative leadership style, but also manager with an authoritarian and delegative style should use this system because it increases the understanding of every message or given task.

Another point to consider when thinking about improving the work environment is to keep the information flow going. Managers should update their team members with all the relevant information so that they can accomplish their tasks and the team should update their managers with all the relevant information so appropriate decisions can be formed. This will make the work environment more transparent and therefore more communicative.

Following the criticism process

It is important to learn how the criticism process works. Managers usually criticize when an employee’s work does not align with their imagination of how the work in the company should be done. But the lack of knowledge of the criticism process can damage the work environment and the relationship between workers. The process can be divided into four steps: 1. Talking to the employee in private 2. Talking about what the employee did to have to go through the talk (it can also be called feedback session) 3. Giving a logic argumentation why another way of work fits better to the company 4. Giving a guidance for the future, so that the employee can learn from the mistake.

Valuing work

It is important to value work. Valuing work can be understood as a positive reinforcement tool. It does not have to happen on a constant basis but used from time to time, the manage can show that the work of the employees matter. Employees value praise; managers should show and appreciate how employees contribute to a meaningful goal and and not only work for a paycheck.

Leaving BOB at home

BOB has to be left at home. BOB is the so-called bag of bullshit and consists of personal problems. Talking in the work environment about BOB should be avoided. It might help to learn a thought stop technique and see the work environment as a place of relief where personal problems do not exist. After all, before and after work there is enough time to solve personal problems and find solutions.

To conclude, a two-way communication system, an ongoing information flow, and the right criticism process help to create a good work environment. Furthermore, it is also necessary to use positive reinforcement tools and to try to be positive at work while avoiding to talking about BOB.
